It’s been a fantastic weekend! The weather has been great, and there’s been some superb racing over the three stages, with 5 new course records at yesterday’s time trial and a new 5-lap course record today. Congratulations to Marc Cox, who held on to pip James Roe to the Div 1 crown by just 22 seconds, whilst Jade Packham’s sprint victory over Hannah Brehaut on the final stage wasn’t enough to stop Hannah winning the women’s GC. In Div 2 Phil Touzeau beat Paul Brehaut by a single second after over 3 hours of racing, whilst Alex Ward completed a clean sweep of all three stages in Div 3 racing his first senior road events this weekend.
Final standings can be found here.
Whilst the GC winners take home the kudos, the winner of the Paul Van Katwyk Memorial Trophy was Mike De Robilliard, who was presented the trophy after the final stage by Paul’s son Alex. Racing in a division of his own, every stage was a time trial for Mike but he pushed himself and finished every stage with a big smile on his face, epitomising the spirit of our Easter Festival.
A big thank you to everyone who has helped put this weekend on, including States Works for sweeping the road at Mont Cuet at short notice and to Mint for hosting us this morning, but especially to all those who volunteered to marshal – without you we couldn’t have raced!
Gary Wallbridge is Cycling Coordinator for the 2023 Island Games and is looking for your help to run the Games.
The Games are being staged from the 8th – 14 July 2023.
Gary is looking to fill a number of key positions, as well as needing a small army of volunteers to be marshals, move barriers, help set up courses etc etc.
You will need to take most/some of that week off work, but by doing so you will ensure the cycling events in the 2023 Games are run smoothly and efficiently.
So, if you wish to get involved please contact Gary by email on garywallbridge123@gmail.com or Facebook messenger to register your interest. Gary will be organising a meeting of all those interested in the coming weeks to go into more detail the weeks activities and how you can be involved.
The key positions yet to be filled are, organisers for the three road events, chief marshal, logistics coordinator and timing and results coordinator.
Race Programme for the week:
Monday women and men’s TT (morning and afternoon)
Tuesday women and men’s MTB XC (morning and afternoon)
Wednesday women and men’s road race (morning and afternoon)
Thursday women and men’s MTB crit (late afternoon/early evening)
Friday women and men’s crit race (afternoon)
Deadline for registration for this Sunday's 10mile TT is 16:30 on Friday: https://www.webscorer.com/regi...
Meet at Cobo kiosk car park from 06:30, Cobo 10 mile course: https://snippets.mapmycdn.com/...
Tickets are now available for the 2022 Paul Van Katwyk Easter Festival here. The £15 entry fee includes a bacon or veggie sausage bap and coffee at the trophy presentation at Mint Brasserie which will immediately follow the completion of Stage 3 on the Sunday morning. Sign up closes on Tuesday 12th April at 9pm.
This event is open to members and non-members aged 16 and above. Members please use the link above and click attend to buy your tickets. Non-members will need to register for a SportMember account here and select the team 'GVC Easter Festival'. Once added you will be able to purchase you ticket using the link in the first paragraph. Please select your food choice from the volunteer tasks options.
It will be a 3 day stage race, with divisional general classifications based on your aggregate time across all three stages:
Friday 15th April: Stage 1 - Mont Cuet circuit crit race
Saturday 16th April: Stage 2 - Reservoir circuit time trial
Sunday 17th April: Stage 3 - Frie Baton circuit road race
Whilst the GC may be for bragging rights, the Paul Van Katwyk trophy will be awarded to the rider who has embodied the spirit of competitiveness, sportsmanship and good humour over the course of the weekend.
Deadline for registration for this Sunday's 15mile TT is 16:30 on Friday: https://www.webscorer.com/regi...
Meet at Rousse car park from 06:30, Les Vardes 15 mile course: https://snippets.mapmycdn.com/...
Junior rider Josh Saunders got his UK racing season of to a mixed start amidst a 60 strong, predominantly senior field at only his second ever British Cycling Regional A event, the Sandisons 2 day stage race in Dorset last weekend.
The weekend began with a 1 mile hill climb, which saw the 17 year old playing to his strengths to place an impressive fourth.
Stage 2 was a 10 mile time trial with riders navigating a mixture of tight sweeping lanes and wide open B roads. All of the junior riders struggled to keep pace on restricted gears given a long gradual descent with a strong tailwind. This left Josh placed as first junior overall but almost half way down the field with two minutes to make up in the General Classification going into the final stage 55 mile road race on Sunday.
The road race was dominated from the start by a brave lone break which was eventually caught by a further breakaway group of 2. 18 riders, including Josh, eventually organised themselves for a concerted chase which would ultimately fall short. With three laps to go Josh continued to look strong in the chasing group and was well placed to contest the final lap sprint for fourth place, however luck was against him and a puncture would saw him retire with two laps to go.
Please note that as a result of the over-running roadworks in Talbot Valley this race will now be held on the L'Eree circuit.
Meet at the lay by car park at the southern end of Rocquaine at 06:30. Sign on closes at 06:40, race starts at 07:00. Please remember your transponders!

2022 Marshalling duties are now available to volunteer for on Sportmember.
We have a slight change this year in that we will be releasing duties in 2 month batches to ensure that all duties are filled. Each club member over the age of 18 is expected to complete 5 duties within the club year.
To volunteer for a duty. Login to your Sportmember account, tap the Attend button on the race that you want to Marshall, scroll down to Tasks and then tap the + button next to the duty.
Remember our marshalling system is equitable, by volunteering to marshall you enable other club member to race, and in turn they volunteer to enable you to race. If you have any questions or comments regarding marshalling duties please email secretary@gvc.gg
If you volunteer for a duty and subsequently no show then you will be suspended from racing until you have completed a replacement duty. If you can’t fulfil a duty that you have volunteered for it is your responsibility to arrange for another club member to cover that duty. Friends and family covering a duty on your behalf is not allowed.

We are delighted to report that the Guernsey Sports Commission have appointed Paul de Garis (aka Digger) as full time Cycling Development Officer with effect from 1 January.
For those that don’t know Digger, he is a professional coach with a strong background in triathlon. After setting up TRI Fitness in 2013 he helped Guernsey Triathlon set up their junior section, and continues to work with members of their senior squad as a cycling coach. He is also currently joint President of the Tri Club, having recently taken up the role last week.
Although employed by the Sports Commission, Digger will work with us to deliver our plans for the future, and he will likely be most visible at our Flyers and Academy programme working alongside our existing team of volunteers and coaches. Nevertheless, his role is to be a resource to help all Club members reach their maximum potential; his remit covers everything from Year 1 Flyers to Super Vets across all disciplines so please feel free to get in touch with him!

Overview
Athletes from Gibraltar, Guernsey, Iceland, Isle of Man and Jersey will score points for their islands in each of five Zwift races held during the winter of 2021/2.
Any athlete who can claim a reasonable tie to that island and uses the appropriate island flag in Zwift can score points for that island (no individual points totals are registered).
All athletes must be registered on Zwift Power and race in the appropriate category indicated. Any DQs issued by Zwift Power will stand.
Each race will have a maximum of 250 points available (except for the final race where 500 will be available). League results will be published on the Jersey Tri Club Facebook (public) group as soon as possible after each event.
A Committee of Vaughan Robinson (Chair, Jersey), Emily Squire (Guernsey), Chris Walker (Gibraltar), Juan Kinley (Isle of Man) and Sigurour Orn Ragnarsson (Iceland) will: a) choose each of the five events, b) decide on the points distribution for each event, c) communicate the timings of events, rules, results and related matters to their domestic athletes and d) resolve any disputes or queries which may arise from time to time.

The first 10 riders (from the five islands) in each category (A-D) will score 10, 9, 8, 7…, 1 points. Subject to each island only being able to accumulate points for two riders, a third rider will instead zero out the points available for other islands. For example, if Iceland had the top three riders they would score 19 points and the other islands would only be able to score positions 4-10 (with points of 7-1).
In addition to the above 220 ranking points, 30 bonus points will be available for the following:
1 points for the island whose rider has the highest 20min watts (in each category A-D)
1 points for the island whose rider has the highest 5min watts (in each category A-D)
1 points for the island whose rider has the highest 1min watts (in each category A-D)
1 points for the island whose rider has the highest 30sec watts (in each category A-D) 1 points for the island whose rider has the highest 15sec watts (in each category A-D)
4 points for the island with the most overall riders
3 points for the island with the second most overall riders
2 points for the island with the third most overall riders
1 point for the island with the fourth most overall riders.
Riders in Zwift Power with an A+ classification (appears as a black A) cannot score ranking points, but can score bonus points. Only riders appearing on the ‘Filtered’ view will count in all cases, those filtered out (DQ’d) will not be counted for the determination of any points.

The Club is proud to be one of the first sports clubs in Guernsey to be awarded the new Guernsey Sportsmark by the Guernsey Sports Commission
SportsMark will be awarded to any sporting organisation which meets a set of strict criteria around governance, safeguarding and coaching.
A number of the island’s sports such as football, rugby and swimming already have similar accreditation through their National Governing Bodies.
Steve Sharman, the Sports Commission’s Relationship Director, said the scheme is initially targeting smaller scale operators that rely on the dedication of volunteers.
"A sporting organisation displaying the SportsMark logo will have provided the GSC with evidence of high standards of welfare and safeguarding, will have shown us the organisation is well managed with appropriate corporate governance, has sound financial practices, has appropriately qualified coaches and a coaching strategy, and has an overall development plan in place for the sport or club.
"We know there are some outstanding local clubs and organisations that deliver high quality sports to our community but there are others who need help to meet even the minimum operating standards. We want to support all our sporting organisations to be the best they can be and reassure those looking to participate, that their chosen sport is safe and well-run."
"We’re incredibly proud to be one of the first sports on the Island to earn SportsMark," said Mark Smith, GVC president.
"What’s most important for us is that all of our members and parents of kids involved in club activity can be completely confident we uphold the highest levels of governance so that everyone can enjoy our events safely.
"This is something we’ve worked very hard on as an organisation over the past few years and to be awarded it by the Sports Commission is very exciting"
Mr Sharman said that many of these smaller organisations are eager to show they take their responsibilities seriously and to validate the safeguarding practices already in place.
"Sportsmark will serve to strengthen safeguarding arrangements for children and young people within sport," said Sarah Elliott, Pan Island Independent Chair Safeguarding Partnership Boards, "whilst providing consistent governance from the grass roots upwards across the myriad of sports organisations and clubs that Guernsey, for a small island, is lucky to have."
The Sports Commission’s Sport Development Officer and Safeguarding Lead Jenny Murphy said the accreditation unlocks extra training support from the Commission, meaning the benefits to clubs and organisations are manifold.
"We want to support clubs to have longevity, be well-run and be a fun and safe place for children and adults," said Ms Murphy.
"Achieving SportsMark shows the community that your sport is safe, well-run and has high standards of welfare and governance which should help increase participation and ensure that those taking part in your sport or volunteering are well supported.

This weekends GVC/Guernsey Rouleurs Zwift ride is one for the badge hunters!
We're turning up the heat and heading to the Volcano circuit! There's 3 badges available for this route. 5 Laps, 10 laps and 25 laps. The meetup is set for 26 laps (just to make sure you can get that important 25th lap done) but no need to do all 26 if you don't want to.
As it's a short lap (2.6miles) and to make it a bit more fun we'll have the rubber band OFF so you can ride at your own pace and jump between groups which will inevitably form. For a bit more spice we've also enabled Race Results so you can see your finishing time.
Total Distance for each badge The “Warmed Up” badge is awarded for 5 laps 20.4 km (12.7 miles), “Hothead” for 10 laps,40.9 km (25.4 miles) and “On Fire!” for 25 laps 102.2 km (63.5 miles) Each badge also awards 1000XP, helping you level up faster!
If you want to join in, you'll need to follow me on the Zwift Companion app Mark Smith GVC and accept the invite - if you haven't got an invite already let me know in the comments below and I'll send you one.

If you already follow me then i’ve likely sent you an invite, if you don’t have an invite and want to join in then please follow me on Zwift, Mark Smith GVC and let me know in the comments below and i’ll get you an invite.

Marshalling duties will be live on Monday 1st Feb 9pm

You need to do 5 duties (3 for dh) - DH set up duties are for Dh only members.
Please only one person per duty. They are time stamped so the first person to volunteer will have rhe duty.
Unless we are told otherwise we are still planning on starting road races on 7th March - if the race ( or any subsequent races )postponed the duties will be carried over to the new date.
Please dont volunteer for a duty before 9pm on Monday - it will be deleted.

So you can go out for a ride with someone who lives with you or, in the case of those that live alone, you can join someone else. HOWEVER if you do this, you must remain social distanced. Deputy Soulsby explicitly said in the Sunday media briefing, "this does not mean that cyclists can ride along chatting to each other" so please use your common sense, avoid riding with others, be safe and wash your hands!
